Tis' the season for anything and everything pumpkin! From pumpkin spice lattes to pumpkin spice doughnuts...we eat it, sip it and scent our homes with it. On occasion, people have asked us if pumpkin is safe for dogs. Why should "hoomans" be the only ones to enjoy this seasonal flavor, right? Well, you'll be happy to know that yes, your pup can eat pumpkin. Not only do they enjoy pumpkin, it's good for them too. Just make sure it's natural pumpkin without the sugar and spices.
Pumpkin is a superfood for dogs and provides vitamins, trace minerals and fiber. This yummy treat is high in zinc, iron, lutein, magnesium, potassium and beta carotene. It can also assist with digestive problems. If your dog doesn't like pumpkin puree on its own, mix a spoonful with their food.
Another tasty way to serve up some pumpkin is in the form of dog treats. Our pups go crazy for anything made with pumpkin...especially biscuits. I've always said if you can whip up a batch of cookies, you can make homemade dog treats. Not only do you have complete control over what goes in the treats, it costs much less than store bought. And, they last for weeks if stored properly.
